Huatulco travel information.
Huatulco is a coastal paradise with crystalline waters and
various types of sand. It is located 277 km (171 mi) from Oaxaca
and 50 minutes, by plane, from Mexico City. Because it is on the
Pacific coast and has lowland jungle vegetation, the climate is
hot and semi-humid, with an average temperature of 28º C (82º F)
and sunny days throughout most of the year. This destination has
nine bays, which are protected areas, and 36 beaches, which are
part of the Bahias de Huatulco National Park. Most of the
beaches have calm blue-green waters, such as those at the
Tangolunda Bay, where you'll find top-notch hotel resorts,
excellent plazas and one of the best golf courses on the Pacific
coast. Another popular beach destination is the Santa Cruz Bay,
considered one of the most important ecological reserves due to
its coral reefs. Thanks to its abundant marine life, not only is
an excellent spot for scuba diving and snorkeling, but it also
hosts the annual Torneo de Pesca de Pez Vela (Sailfish Fishing
Tournament) in April and May. When exploring these destinations,
the vast natural beauty, the diverse landscapes and the many
recreational activities that each one offers will leave you
fascinated. What's more, Huatulco offers excellent tourist
services and you'll find the people there very hospitable,

BEACHES
Huatulco is unique in that it has one of the most important
ecosystems in the nation. That is largely due to the fact that
it has more than 36 beaches on nine bays. The beaches in this
region, which are surrounded by lush lowland jungle vegetation,
are known for their blue-green waters, mild waves and white sand.
You can arrive at the beaches by car or on boats departing from
Santa Cruz Huatulco. At all of these destinations you can do a
wide variety of aquatic sports and enjoy the impressive flora
and fauna.
Bahia de Tangolunda. Located 5 km (3 mi) northwest of the Santa
Cruz Bay on Highway 200. This bay has five beaches that cover an
area of 243 hectares (600 acres): Ventura, Manzanillo, Tomillo,
Tangolunda and Rincon Sabroso. This group of beaches has fine
white sand, crystalline emerald-green waters and gentle waves.
In this area you'll find top-notch hotels, shopping centers and
one of the best golf courses on the Pacific coast.
Bahia de Chahue. Located five minutes northwest of Santa Cruz
Huatulco. You'll find three beaches at this bay: Chahue,
Esperanza and Tejon. They are surrounded by tropical vegetation
and rugged rock formations. You'll find four-star hotels with
excellent services and restaurants offering local and
international cuisine. Esperanza Beach has strong surf and warm
waters, making it ideal for surfing and windsurfing.
Bahia de Cacaluta. Located southwest of Santa Cruz Bay. This is
an important water source for protected area Bahias de Huatulco
National Park. The beaches at this bay include Cacaluta, which
has deep warm waters and big waves, making it ideal for surfing
and windsurfing; and Arroyo, which doesn't get many visitors
because it has coarse sand with shards of coral. This bay area,
which has calm clear waters and lowland jungle vegetation, is
the natural habitat of various bird species, including seagulls,
heron and quail. In the bay's waters you can see various fish
species, such as marlin, sailfish and tuna. As for mammals,
you'll see badgers, armadillos, raccoons, wild boar, deer,
iguanas, turtles and many other species.
Bahia Conejos. Located 3 km (2 mi) east of Tangolunda Bay.
Follow Highway 200 toward the mouth of the Copalita River. This
bay consists of four beaches: Conejos, Punta Arenas, Arena and
Tejoncito. They all offer boating services, hotels and
restaurants offering international cuisine. You'll also find
rentals for cars, motorcycles, scuba and snorkeling gear, and
horses.
Bahia Riscalillo. Located west of the Santa Cruz Bay. To arrive
at this bay, you must take a 10- minute boat ride. Riscalillo
Beach has fine sand, a moderate slope and shallow blue-green
waters with small waves. The lowland jungle vegetation becomes
more abundant during the rainy season. This area has hundreds of
animal species and a wide variety of insects. It's also the
habitat of the blue snail, an endangered species.
Bahia San Agustin. Located 35 km (22 mi) west of Santa Cruz
Huatulco. This bay area has rocky islands and headlands. Isla
San Agustin is the largest island of the Huatulco bays. Because
of its many coral reefs, it's the ideal spot for scuba diving.
There are two beaches at this bay: San Agustin and Cacalutilla.
Both have fine sand, calm waters and a warm climate. Several
meters offshore you'll find a white coral reef that is perfect
for scuba diving and snorkeling. Here you can rent free-diving
gear and boats with outboard engines.
Bahia Santa Cruz. Located south of La Crucecita. This bay
consists of three beaches: Santa Cruz, La Yerbabuena and La
Entrega. They all have white sand, a gentle slope and calm
turquoise waters. These places have excellent hotels and
restaurant. At Santa Cruz Beach you can visit a large marine
park and an ecological reserve with coral reefs and many fish.
Here you can rent motorboats, scuba and snorkeling equipment and
swimming gear.
Bahia de Chachacual. Located southwest of the Santa Cruz Bay.
This bay is only accessible by a 30-minute boat ride. It has
lush lowland jungle vegetation and mangroves, which are now part
of an ecological reserve at the Parque Nacional. The two virgin
beaches, Chachacual and La India, have fine white sand, a gentle
slope and clear warm waters. These beaches are ideal for
observing marine life, including moray eels, jellyfish and
coral. In the Santa Cruz area and La Crucecita there are hotels,
trailer parks and restaurants serving local and international
fare.
Bahias de Organos and Maguey. Located 2.5 km (1.5 mi) south of
Santa Cruz Huatulco Bay. These two bays have beaches with fine
white sand and warm blue-green waters.
At these quiet places you can observe a wide variety of flora,
including mangrove trees, fern trees, Palmer-trumpet trees and
guayacans. You can also do aquatic sports here.
SCUBA DIVING
Huatulco is the ideal destination for scuba diving and
snorkeling. Here you'll find coral reefs that are the natural
habitat of such species as angelfish, sea snails, crabs, puffer
fish, marlins and turtles. You can also explore the remains of
sunken ships.
Playa Santa Cruz. Located 4 km (2.5 mi) from Tangolunda. Thanks
to the abundant marine life in the waters of the Pacific Ocean
and the pleasant climate, this beach is excellent for scuba
diving and snorkeling. Here you'll find a large marine park and
coral reefs about 100 meters (330 feet) off the coast.
Playa San Agustin. Located 35 km (22 mi) west of Santa Cruz
Huatulco. This beach of fine sand stretches about 1,500 meters
(4,950 feet). In its crystalline waters you can go diving and
snorkeling along a white reef. You also can see the remains of a
sunken ship.
Playa La Entrega. Located 2 km (1 mi) from the town of Santa
Cruz. In the calm crystalline waters of this beautiful beach you
can observe yellowtail, skipjack and pardo. The beach has
restroom facilities, showers and rentals for free-diving gear.
Playa Arena. Located on the western end of the Conejos Bay,
about 200 meters (660 feet) from Blvd. Benito Juarez. This white-sand
beach with clear green-blue waters is a great spot to observe
sailfish, dorado and roosterfish. You can rent snorkeling and
scuba diving equipment on the beach.
ECOTOURISM
The biodiversity and beautiful landscapes make Huatulco an
excellent place to observe abundant flora and fauna on land and
sea. Thanks to the region's widely diverse ecosystems, you can
do all kinds of recreational, cultural and research activities.
In short, you can enjoy nature in its purest form.
Cascadas Magicas de Copalitilla. Located 65 km (40 mi) from
Huatulco along the Copalita River. These majestic waterfalls are
an excellent place to relax. For a truly unique experience, you
can go swimming at these waterfalls in a magical atmosphere with
lush vegetation.
Bahias de Huatulco National Park. Located in the town of Santa
Maria Huatulco, west of Santa Cruz Huatulco. This is an
important protected area. This park covers 11,890 hectares
(29,368 acres) and has some 9,000 lowland jungle plant species
in its gallery forest and mangroves. Near the coast, there are
264 mammal species, including armadillos and white-tailed deer,
and 701 bird species, such as hummingbirds, pelicans and hawks.
The park also has 470 reptile species, including black iguanas,
salamanders and snakes. Off the coast you can spy dolphins,
whales and turtles, depending on the time of year.
GOLFING
Huatulco has one of the best golf courses on the Pacific coast.
The course's designer, Mario Schjetnan, went to great lengths to
assure that golfers can enjoy a beautiful panoramic view. The
course also has three lakes, where you'll see migratory birds.
Club de Golf Tangolunda. Located at the Tangolunda Bay. The
greens have a 750-sq meter putting area; some holes have double
greens. This 18-hole, par 72 championship course is 6,851 yards
and it's very challenging. The club offers a restaurant, bar,
professional tennis courts, a swimming pool, restrooms, dressing
rooms and electric-powered carts. Opens daily at 7:00 a.m
NIGHTLIFE
In Huatulco you'll find various bars and nightclubs offering an
excellent night out for you and your friends. At these places,
you can drink mezcal or tequila while listening to the latest in
rock, pop or electronic music. If you're looking for a truly
original atmosphere, we recommend La Mina, in Chahue, and the
establishments at the Santa Cruz Bay and La Crucecita, in Santa
Maria Huatulco
