Mexicali travel information.

MEXICALI’S HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

It was until the end of the XIX century, in 1888, when the Federal Government granted Guillermo Andrade with great extensions of land in this part of the country searching to settle the border zone with the United States of America.

It was in the Agricultural Valley where Mexicali’s development got initiated, and the companies that had the equipment to irrigate wished to take advantage of the Water from the Colorado River in Agriculture, and promoted the construction of watering canals. This happened between 1898 and 1900.

At the beginning of last century in the 1900, the Region of the Low Colorado was a zone practically uninhabited. The only exception were some human settlings like Los Algodones and the Cucapah Indian Community that had hundreds or maybe thousands of years inhabiting this inhospitable region.

The word Mexicali is made up by the words Mexico and California. It is said this name was imposed in 1902 by the Colonel Agustin Sanginez, then Political Chief of the North District. In its first months Mexicali belonged to the Ensenada Municipality like an ascribed municipal section to Los Algodones, and afterwards like head of the section. Nonetheless, it was considered that Mexicali’s Official Foundation took place on March 14th , 1903, with the appointment of Manuel Vizcarra like as Auxiliary Judge.

Colorado River Land Company
The Colorado Riverland Company was dedicated to lease agricultural property to foreigners especially of Chinese, Indian, and Japanese origin because oddly Mexicans were considered like simple temporary workers. This unjust situation triggered in 1937 the agricultural conflict known as the Assault to the Lands.

The Chinese community has been a very important factor in its development, and their main activities have been the Agriculture, Commerce, and Gastronomy.

It was the 4th of November of 1914 when at the time Main Political Chief named Baltazar Aviles decrees Mexicali’s Municipality and he also called for elections to form the First City Council. It was headed by Francisco L. Montejano. From 1927 to 1930 Mexicali’s City Council was kept as a Council and from 1930 to 1962 as a Delegation. This was up to when Baja California stopped being a territory and became the 29th State of the Mexican Republic.
Starting in 1953 Mexicali initiates another stage when Baja California is transformed into a Federative Entity, and the Free and Sovereign Municipalities are organized…..

Mexicali is a city full of contrasts; you can enjoy the magnificent fairs and exhibitions that traditionally take place here as well as its beautiful natural attractions. La Laguna Salada (The Salty Lagoon) that in the past was covered totally with water. The impressive Rumorosa (Mountain highway to Tecate), and the awesome Cañon de Guadalupe (Guadalupe Canyon) that is considered one of the most spectacular attractions that belongs to the Laguna Salada zone. Come and enjoy them!!!!!!

Mexicali has an 18-hole Golf course and complementary services like Restaurant, Ballroom hall, etc.

The city of Mexicali is visited daily by a great number of tourists. Be it for business or pleasure, this has been a determining factor why the city has greatly developed the service industry and where we find a great range of places to have fun and to eat in a delicious way.

Taste the great variety of exquisite dishes that the Mexicali cuisine has. You can find Japanese, French, Italian, and Mexican food. The Chinese food stands out by its tradition and it has more than 100 establishments in the whole city. You can also enjoy interesting plays by local and national artists. Visit the Culture House, the Baja California State University Regional Museum, or the interactive Kid’s Sun Museum. On the outskirts of the city on the Mexicali-San Felipe highway you can visit the Community Cucapah Museum “Juan Garcia Aldama,” and on the Mexicali Valley the Assault to the Lands Museum located at the Michoacan de Ocampo common land.
