Escondido, a heavenly beach destination, lies on the coast of
the state of Oaxaca, 249 km (154 mi) south of the state capital.
The climate is semi-humid, with rainfall in the summer and an
average temperature of 28º C (82º F).
Among its many attractions, this destination offers a notable
group of beaches surrounded by lush vegetation. The blue-green
waters are ideal for doing a wide variety of aquatic sports. One
of the beaches, Zicatela, hosts an international surfing
competition, while in November a sportfishing tournament takes
place at Playa Principal. In the environs you'll find nature
areas like the Lagunas de Chacahua National Park, which consists
of a group of lagoons and mangroves where you can spy a wide
variety of indigenous wildlife, such as crocodiles, iguanas,
exotic bird species and songbirds.
SCUBA DIVING
In Puerto Escondido you'll find gorgeous beaches with calm clear
waters where you can go snorkeling and scuba diving with
experienced guides.
Puerto Angelito. Lies south of Puerto Escondido. At this beach
with warm waters you can go scuba diving and snorkeling with
experienced guides.
Playa Carrizalillo. Located southwest of Puerto Escondido. This
beach has clear calm waters with a pleasant temperature. On the
beach you can rent snorkeling equipment.
Playa Bacocho. Lies west of Puerto Escondido. This is the ideal
spot for snorkeling. In addition, you can take diving lessons
from certified instructors.
FISHING
Puerto Escondido has several spots where you can go fishing for
marlin, sailfish, dorado and tuna throughout the entire year.
Playa Principal. Located south of Puerto Escondido. Here you can
rent boats and equipment for inshore and offshore fishing
excursions. In November, you can compete in an annual fishing
tournament.
Laguna de Manialtepec. Located 16 km (10 mi) west of Puerto
Escondido, off Highway 200. This lagoon is 8 km (5 mi) long and
is surrounded by mangroves and dense vegetation. This is one the
best places to go fishing. In these waters you'll find mojarra,
bass, mullet and catfish.
FESTIVALS AND TRADITIONS
Among Puerto Escondido's most important celebrations is the
Carnival, which is held for three days prior to Ash Wednesday.
During this event you'll see parades with masked dancers and
ceremonies to crown the queen and other celebrated participants
of the carnival. Another important festivity is the Fiestas de
Noviembre, which features live music, dance contests and
cultural events. Finally, you can attend interesting sporting
events, such as an international surfing competition and a
sailfish fishing tournament.
NIGHTLIFE
Puerto Escondido is mostly known for its beaches and crafts
stores, however the port also has a select group of bars and
discos where you can enjoy drinks with friends on a warm night.
You'll find most of these establishments on Andador Perez Gasca
or on Blvd. Benito Juarez.
At Mazunte Beach you can visit the Centro Mexicano de la
Tortuga, a turtle sanctuary dedicated to the research and
conservation of various turtle species. Another strong draw is
Puerto Escondido's delicious fish and seafood dishes, as well as
its regional Oaxacan fare, such as mole and quesillo (a stringy
cheese). Here you also can partake in an interesting celebration
in honor of the Virgen de Juquila (Virgin of Juquila). In
addition, you'll find beautiful crafts made of seashells and
black coral. At night, you can party until the break of dawn at
the restaurants, bars and nightclubs along the beach.
